Our Journey Through Finance Education

2019

The Beginning: A Simple Question

Everything started when our founder, Marielle Thornbury, noticed something troubling during her years as a corporate financial analyst. Bright university graduates would join teams with impressive academic credentials, yet they'd struggle with basic ratio interpretation when real company data hit their desks.

The gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application was enormous. Students could memorize formulas but couldn't tell you why a current ratio of 2.5 might signal trouble for a retail company, or how to spot warning signs in debt-to-equity trends.

  • Identified critical gap in practical financial education
  • Began developing hands-on teaching methodologies
  • Started with weekend workshops in Adelaide community centers
  • Focus on real-world case studies from Australian companies

Growth Through Understanding

Word spread faster than we expected. What began as small weekend sessions grew into something much bigger when local businesses started asking us to train their junior staff. We realized we weren't just teaching ratios – we were teaching financial literacy that actually stuck.

This period taught us that people learn differently when they can see immediate relevance. Instead of abstract examples, we used actual company annual reports. Students would analyze Woolworths' inventory turnover or examine Telstra's debt management strategies.

  • Expanded to corporate training programs
  • Developed signature case-study methodology
  • Partnered with 15 local businesses for real-world examples
  • Created industry-specific ratio analysis frameworks
  • Launched online resource library

Today: Building Financial Confidence

We've refined our approach based on feedback from hundreds of learners. Our programs now serve everyone from university students preparing for finance careers to small business owners trying to understand their own financial statements.

What hasn't changed is our core belief: financial ratio analysis shouldn't be intimidating. When taught properly, with relevant examples and clear context, these tools become powerful aids for better decision-making.

  • Over 500 successful program completions

Our Philosophy on Financial Education

We believe that financial literacy shouldn't be a privilege reserved for those with business degrees. Every professional who encounters financial data – whether they're managing budgets, evaluating suppliers, or making investment decisions – deserves to understand what the numbers actually mean.

Too often, financial education focuses on memorization rather than comprehension. Students learn to calculate ratios but not to interpret them meaningfully. They can tell you the formula for return on equity but struggle to explain why it matters for different types of companies.

"Our goal isn't just to teach formulas – it's to build genuine understanding that helps people make better financial decisions throughout their careers."

— Marielle Thornbury, Founder

Petra Hawthorne

Lead Instructor, Advanced Analysis

"What excites me most about our approach is seeing that moment when concepts click for students. When someone suddenly understands why working capital ratios behave differently in seasonal businesses, or recognizes early warning signs in cash flow analysis – that's when real learning happens. We're not just teaching calculations; we're developing analytical thinking that serves people throughout their careers."
